21th AUGUST TO 01th SEPTEMBER 2012

Organizers

The 8th International Summer School will be organized by REIC in collaboration with Faculty of Resource Management, „German Development Cooperation“ – GIZ Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit

Goals

Objectives of the summer school are:

  • Educational support to students and professionals from the region in the field of renewable energy sources (RES) and energy efficiency (EE)
  • Enhacement of interdisciplinary approach to sustainable energy issue,
  • Dissemination of best practice on energy conservation and renewable energy
  • Capacity building of renewable energy promotion on the regional level as an element  of sustainable developemnt in the region ,
  • Enhacement of dissemination of information on potentials of RES and EE in the Region.

Concept

Local governments and authorities play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change, all the more so when considering that 80% of energy consumption and CO2 emissions is associated with urban activity.

After the adoption, in 2008, of the EU Climate and Energy Package, the European Commission launched the Covenant of Mayors to endorse and support the efforts deployed by local authorities in the implementation of sustainable energy policies. The Covenant of Mayors foresees a strong participation of the Municipality with the assumption of formal commitment with the EU, the preparation of Baseline Emissions Inventory (BEI) and the Sustainability Energy Action Plan (SEAP).

Aware of all that, the 8th Summer School will provide a direct training on the most current important issues related to the EE and RES on how to set up a SEAP. At the same time the two weeks of courses will be used by lectures and participants to complete the BEI and the SEAP of the host town of the Summer School: Fojnica. This action will be helpful on both sides:

-       to improve the capacities of young professionals in the field of EE/RES;

-       to support the adoption of the SEAP in Fojnica.

As a matter of fact, the Summer School is completely dedicated to contribute to the sustainable development of the whole South East Europe through the improvements of the expertise of the young students and professionals of the area and the production of a shining example of planning in EE/RES.

Few selected trainers will be present during the whole summer school teaching participants how to do local energy planning aiming sustainable development. Participants will work on development of SEAP, divided in teams, based on concrete input data. In this way, the summer school will became more close to initiative of Covenant of Mayors. Apart of trainers, in field experts from EU and Region will give lectures on specific topics.

The summer school is co financed from ENER SUPPLY project (www.ener-supply.eu). The project is co financed by South East Europe programme.
